From: Alan Calmes <acalmes>
Date: Tuesday, October 29, 1996
What Is Being Done to Control Insects and Mold Now that Systematic
Fumigation Has Ended?
The 12 Annual National Archives and Records Administration
Preservation Conference
March 18, 1997
College Park, Maryland

The NARA Annual Preservation Conferences cover topics on the
creation, care and handling, duplication, and long term storage of
information on paper, film, tape, and disk. The March 18, 1997,
conference will focus on new methods of preventing and treating
insects and fungi in archives.

End of Fumigation
Integrated Pest Management

Since systematic fumigation ended a few years ago, there have been
many developments in the prevention of insect and fungi infestations
in archives. The old method of fumigating all incoming records had
to be abandoned in the mid-1980s when health and safety regulations
prohibited the use of toxic chemicals such as ethylene oxide. There
have been some successes in the search for effective treatments with
the use of freezers, vacuum chambers, oxygen starvation, and less
toxic chemicals. Recently, however, preventative approaches,
including "Integrated Pest Management," has emerged as a practical
and affordable solution. For registration form, please send an email
