Preserving pumpkins

I have a slightly off topic question and I am hoping someone on the
DistList could help me. I need to know if there is any way to
preserve, for a relatively long period of time, carved Halloween
pumpkins. Can they simply be dried? Freeze dried? Is there some sort
of fixative? I highly doubt any of these methods will be successful,
considering the organic nature of the object, but since this group
is the best place for answers to questions like this, I thought I
would give it a try.

**** Moderator's comments: This query is indeed a bit off
topic, but is accepted in hope that the answers might be of some
    broader interest
