The University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Library and
Information Science is hosting the following seminar on Basic
Preservation, at the Thompson Conference Center at The University of
Texas at Austin. The speaker for the seminar will be Karen
Motylewski.  Ms. Motylewski is director of Preservation and
Conservation Studies at the GSLIS, UT-Austin.  This unique program
trains professional conservators and preservation managers for
library, archives and other documentary collections.

Introduction to Preservation
November 8, 1996, 9:00am-5:00pm     Cost:  $75.00

Purpose:
  This one-day program is designed to introduce participants to the
  basic concepts of preservation and to provide some decision-making
  tools for preservation planning.  If you are concerned about
  damage in your historical or research materials, if you want your
  holdings to be accessible to future generations of users, or if
  you wonder about the need for preservation in the age of the
  virtual library, this workshop will supply practical advice for
  extending the life-expectancy of your collections.

Program:
  This seminar (not hands-on) will include the following topics:
  Elements of a preservation program (characteristics of
  collections, causes of damage, protection and care strategies);
  Risk management and emergency preparedness (security, fire
  protection, coping with disasters); Strategic planning for
  preservation (individual planning exercise and discussion);
  Questions & Answers.
