The Huntington Library announces a new conservation workshop and
seminar series funded by the Kress Foundation

One-day seminar on Atlas Structures
Pamela Spitzmueller
Head of Conservation
University of Iowa Libraries and Member of the University of Iowa
    Center for the Book
Saturday, November 16th, 1996
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This seminar and workshop for professional book and paper
conservators will condense into one intensive day the week-long
course previously taught by Ms. Spitzmueller at the University of
Iowa on the same subject. Participants will learn about the history
of maps and atlases, and about terminology dealing with the
particular structure of atlas-type books. The components of the
atlas--guards, stubs, compensation, folding, etc. will be presented
in detail both through slides and examples to examine. Mending
strategies for folded and guarded items will be studied. A slide
presentation will cover six or seven case studies of atlas
treatments. Participants are welcome to bring examples of atlas
problems/solutions for discussion. A short hands-on session will
also take place.

The seminar will be limited to twelve participants.

Cost: $150.00 (includes a box lunch)

Ms. Spitzmueller will also give a lecture at the Huntington at 7:30
p.m. on Friday, November 15, entitled "Leading a Double Life: Book
Conservation and Artists' Books". She will talk about her many
one-of-a-kind artists' books, which are often inspired by studies of
historical book structures. The lecture is free and open to the
public. Seminar participants who are in town Friday evening are
cordially invited to attend.
