In response to the question from Meredith Curtis, a good alternative
to glue sticks is a plastic syringe, which can be filled with the
adhesive of your choice.  It applies a thin, even line of adhesive.
It has a tight-fitting cap so there is no clean-up involved with
each use.  I have kept one filled with adhesive for as long as a
year without the adhesive drying out.  They are available in a few
sizes from
