PARS program on photographic and recording media

From: Robin Dale <rd89>
Date: Friday, June 28, 1996
The PARS Photographic and Recording Media Committee is sponsoring a
program at the ALA Annual Conference. Entitled "The Silent Future?
Current Practice and Proposed Standards for Preservation of Audio
Materials," this program will be held Saturday, July 6, from 2 pm to
4 pm in the Jacob Javits Convention Center - Room 1A 21.
Co-sponsored by the ALCTS AV Committee, the PARS program will follow
the AV Committee's program, "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow: Preservation
Issues of Media Resources" which is being held earlier the same day,
from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm (same location).

This program was designed to address the issues associated with
preservation of non-book media *and* do so in such a way that
attendees can take information "home" and design or work on future
audio preservation projects.

Topics to addressed include:

    * information on existing standards/guidelines in the field of
        audio preservation;

    * the controversy of analog vs. digital reformatting (why one
        vs. the other? benefits? do we have to choose? etc.);

    * accounts of past/current/upcoming audio preservation
        reformatting projects (why certain formats were chosen, what
        standards were followed, problems which could have been
        avoided/corrected, if vendors were used, etc.)

    * identification of avenues for action to promote creation of
        standards or "best practices" for audio preservation

Speakers and panelists include:

    * Jerry Fabris - Curator of Sound Recordings, Edison National
        Historic Site

    * Bradford Garton - Associate Professor of Music and
        Co-Director, Electronic Music Center, Columbia University

    * Don McCormick - Curator, Rogers & Hammerstein Archives of
        Recorded Sound, New York Public Library of Performing Arts

    * Mark Roosa - Lloyd C. Cotson Chief Preservation Officer,
        Huntington Library, San Marino, CA

    * Susan Tyler Stinson - Curator, Belfer Audio Archives,
        Syracuse University.
