Subject: PARS session on creating and managing digital collections
"Creating and managing digital collections" is the general theme of the PARS discussion group/PARS-CMDS (Preservation and Reformatting Section/Collection Management and Development Section, American Library Association)discussion group combined meeting on Sunday, July 7, 8:00 - 9:30 AM, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the Louis XVI E Room. Guest speakers will talk informally, answer questions, and join in the discussion. Elizabeth Roderick, Assistant Director, Library Development and Networking Division of the Library of Virginia, and Sandeep Somaiya of the VTLS imaging group, will talk about their experiences "building" the Library of Virginia Digital Collections. The LVA Digital Initiative Web site includes electronic finding aids, and two sizeable digital image collections. The U. S. Army photograph collection of more than 3,500 JPEG images is linked to a keyword searchable database. The Virginia Colonial Records project links digital images of 14,704 survey reports to an electronic index of more than 300,000 entries. Subject access is through at VTLS search engine. (Web site address for the collection is http://image.vtls.com/) Perry Willett of Indiana University will share his perspective on the challenges of managing electronic text collections. Electronic resources present problems of format, audience, accuracy, interface, compatibility and support in ways that have not yet been standardized or routinized as they have for printed materials. Bring your coffee and questions. The meeting will end at 9:30 to dovetail with the PARS program "Digital Preservation: Building an Access Infrastructure," also in the Waldorf-Astoria.
