Research Studentship at University College London:
The Kinetics of Salt Damage

Applications are invited for a three-year research studentship on
the kinetics of salt damage, to commence in October 1996. The
studentship is funded by the UK Natural Environment Research
Council. It will be tenable at the Institute of Archaeology and is
expected to lead to the award of a PhD. It is primarily intended
for British students, but it is also open to students from the
European Union on a fees-only basis.

The research student will examine the kinetics of salt damage in
porous materials and will take into account both single salts and
salt mixtures. The studies will include the influence of the
substrate, following a recent suggestion in the literature that
damage to wall paintings is influenced by the mineralogical identity
of the substrate. The work will be carried out alongside a project
funded by the European Union, looking at the thermodynamics of mixed
salt systems.

The project will provide training in a wide variety of techniques,
including SEM, pore size distribution, image analysis, X-ray
diffraction, and understanding of petrological thin sections. The
training will be supported by visits to sites and museums, to set
the fundamental research into its practical context.

Applicants should have, or should be expecting to get, a good
honours degree in a relevant subject such as geomorphology,
chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, or archaeological
conservation. Prior knowledge of archaeology or conservation is not
necessary.
