Cleaning marble

I am asking for advice about cleaning 19th century marble busts that
were defaced with ballpoint pen marks. The local marble company has
recommended acetone or paint thinner. Is that really the best way to
go about it? The busts are kept indoors. Your advice will be much
appreciated.
