RFP: Digital imaging

The following announcement of an RFP from the Library of Congress for
conversion of original materials to digital images might be of
interest to list subscribers.  All inquiries and questions regarding
the RFP should be directed to Helen Mathura, the LC contracting
officer cited below.  Please note that the RFP can be requested in
hard copy only. No machine-readable versions will be distributed.

    D-Digital Images from Original Documents/Text Conversion and
    SGML-Encoding SOL RFP96-18 DUE 07/11/96 Helen S. Mathura,
    Contracting Officer, 202-707-8609.  The Library of Congress (LC)
    has a requirement to digitize portions of original books and
    manuscripts in order to permit the dissemination of its content
    online as part of the National Digital Library Program.  The
    solicitation is divided into two (2) LOT's.  LOT 1 includes
    scanning images of standard-sized bound and unbound materials as
    well as the conversion and SGML-encoding (in accordance with the
    Library's DTD) of a portion of the digital images to
    machine-readable texts.  LOT 2 includes the scanning of large
    and fragile bound materials.  The scanned images and converted
    texts shall also be logically named and/or numbered and
    delivered on write-once CD-ROM disks.  An indefinite quantity
    task order contract with a base year and four (4) option years
    is anticipated.  A preproposal conference shall be held on June
    5, 1996.  Requests for the solicitation to be issued
    approximately May 15, 1996 must be in *writing* and may be faxed
