Visit Preservation Technologies, Inc.: A Look at the Bookkeeper Mass Deacidification Process 7 May 96 10-12 noon Preservation Technologies, Inc., (PTI) plant in Cranberry Township, PA, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. Directions are available. Car pools can be arranged from PALINET Pittsburgh office in Forest Hills. No charge The PTI staff will provide a workshop: * the history of mass deacidification * what mass deacidification is intended to do * what materials are suitable to mass deacidify A plant tour will follow. PTI staff will be available to answer your questions. Introduction to Paper Conservation: A Hands-On Session May 21 9:30 am-4 pm 2033 Murray Avenue (corner of Murray Avenue and Hobart Street) Equity Realty Building 2nd floor, rear entrance on Hobart Street (see sign on door "W.Bennett") Pittsburgh, PA 15217 (Squirrel Hill) Directions: Available from PALINET Pittsburgh Office. Class Size: limited to 8 This workshop will cover the following topics: pastemaking, surface cleaning, flattening, mending/hinging, mylar encapsulation, and media concerns. Also to be discussed will be how to diagnose problems and when to stop. Handouts will be available as will samples of selected materials. Participants should bring expendable paper-based documents or fine art. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Tools and supplies will be provided. However, if possible, participants should bring an apron. Instructor: Wendy Bennett, Paper Conservator. Clamshell Box Workshop June 20-21 9 am-4 pm Conservation Lab, Hillman Library, University of Pittsburgh Class size: limited to 6 Fee: $137 (PALINET members); $177 (members of other networks); $227 (nonmembers) Fees include $12 for supplies. In this 2-day workshop, participants will learn how to construct a double-tray clam shell box, based on the Library of Congress design. This enclosure provides a cost effective and archivally sound method of protecting and housing rare books. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and rubber-soled shoes. Tools and supplies will be provided. However, if possible, participants should bring a straight edge and an apron.
