Subject: Preservation codes for Conspectus
Draft model for the recording of preservation information on the Australian Conspectus In response to Resolution AE1, passed by delegates at the 3rd National Roundtable on Libraries and Asia, held in Canberra on 16 February 1995 viz: That the DNC Office call upon Australian libraries with an interest in Asian materials to demonstrate their commitment to preserving Asian materials by: * co-operating with the DNC Office and the National Preservation Office (NPO) to develop preservation codes for recording the preservation status of Asian materials collections and recording this information in the Conspectus database. The facility already exists on the NBD for data on the preservation status to be recorded. * co-operating with the DNC Office and the NPO to develop a classification system for describing the "significance" of their Asian collections. * adopting procedures to be developed by the DNC Office to include information about the significance of collections on the Conspectus database. A document has been drafted by the DNC Office, in consultation with staff from the National Preservation Office and Preservation Services, National Library of Australia, to provide a draft model for the recording of preservation information on the Australian Conspectus. We are now seeking the views of Conspectus users on this draft model. At the end of the consultation process the model will be redesigned based on comments received and distributed as an information leaflet to users of the Australian Conspectus, as well as Conspectus users in other countries. It will also be incorporated in the next edition of the Australian Conspectus Manual. The DNC Office is interested in receiving comments on the suggested draft model, with replies due before 30 April 1996.
