Subject: Furniture and wooden objects group
If you are involved with the conservation of (wooden) objects (e.g. furniture, architectural woodwork, treen, etc.), then the Furniture Section of the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation (UKIC) would be interested to hear from you. This section is actively developing its interests beyond the confines of furniture to encompass other relevant areas of (wooden) object conservation. Our aim is to encourage conservators working with wood, and that are not represented within UKIC, to use the Furniture Section as a forum in which to communicate ideas, news and issues. Furniture is made of a myriad of materials: wood, metal, glass, ceramic, ivory, mother-of-pearl, textiles, paper, papier mach, tortoiseshell, plastic, paints and varnishes, in fact it is difficult to think of a single material which has not been used in furniture. The treatment of such a wide range of materials can often be a complex undertaking involving several specialists from other disciplines. Indeed, it is precisely this wealth and variety of professional expertise that we intend to promote and share through our newsletter and conferences. We have planned a conference on the 18 November 1996, in London (UK): Pest Attack and Control in Organic Material. watch this space! Although we are presently called a Furniture section, you do not have to be involved with chairs and chests of drawers to join us or send copy for our newsletter. We would particularly like to hear about the type of work you undertake and any related information you would be willing to share. Please send your copy to: Timothy Hayes, Furniture Conservation, The Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington, London, SW7 2RL, UK. Information on the conference available from: Colin Piper, Highfield House, The Greens, Leafield, Whitney, OX8 5NP, UK. +44 1993 878593 Or via E-mail: Dominique Rogers, <do [at] pepin__demon__co__uk>, I will pass on the messages to Tim and Colin.
