There is a research project underway at De Montfort University,
Leicester, looking at offgassing from display materials.

A good recent reference to start on (with a good bibliography) is

"Testing materials for use in the storage and display of
    antiquities--a revised methodology", L R Green & D Thickett,
Studies in Conservation, Vol 40, No 3, August 1995. pps 145-152

It is basically a revision of the "Oddy" test.
