Head of Preservation Department

The Texas Tech University Libraries are seeking a Head of
Preservation Department to manage preservation and conservation
activities. Duties include supervising the operation of the
Hoblizelle Conservation Laboratory in the new Southwest
Collection/Special Collections Building, and acting as preservation
and conservation liaison with other departments within the
libraries. Responsibilities include planning, developing and
implementing programs for preservation management, such as staff
training, environmental monitoring, and disaster planning,  and all
aspects of material treatment on library and archival materials.
Supervises staff of one full-time conservation technician and
student assistants. Reports to the Associate Director of Libraries
for Special Collections.

Qualifications:  Masters Degree in Library Science or related field.
Advanced training in library or archival preservation and
conservation through a recognized academic training program or
formal apprenticeship. Demonstrated extensive preservation
management and conservation experience. Strong managerial abilities,
communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary and Benefits:  Base salary and range for a 12-month
appointment is $32,916-$39,452.  Benefits package includes choice of
retirement programs, including TIAFF-CREF, 13 state holidays;
Blue-Cross-Blue Shield; and no state or local income tax.  This
position holds academic status with opportunities for promotion and
continuing appointment.

General Information:  Texas Tech University Libraries include the
University Library, Southwest Collection, Archive of the Vietnam
Conflict, University Archives, Rare Books and Manuscripts, and
Archive of  Turkish Oral Narrative.  The special collections will
move to a new $8.8 million library in summer 1996.  Texas Tech
University, with an enrollment of 25,000 is the youngest of four
major comprehensive state universities in Texas.  A wide range of
academic programs is offered in seven colleges and schools of law,
medicine, allied health, and nursing, including nearly 100 degree
offerings at the master's level and 50 at doctoral level.  The
University Library has over 1.3 million volumes and a budget of over
$6 million.  The Southwest Collection holds 20 million manuscript
items.  Lubbock has a metropolitan population of 224,000 and is the
West Texas center for higher education, agriculture, health care,
banking, and business.  Located on the Texas High Plains, the city
enjoys an average of 270 days of sunshine annually, low summer
humidity, and moderate winters.
