Subject: Request for bids: conservation treatment
The Rare Book Department of The Free Library of Philadelphia is seeking contract bids for conservation treatment of books, original art and autograph letters from our collections of the works of Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham, and Kate Greenaway as part of an access and preservation grant which is being funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. We have broken the material into 9 lots so that the work could be spread over several vendors. A conservation survey has been performed by Hedi Kyle, Chief Conservator at The American Philosophical Society, with input from Karen Lightner, Preservation Librarian for the Rare Book Department. The survey specifies current condition and requested treatment. The conservation treatment of one lot of 8 books should be completed by June 1, 1996. The treatment of the remaining lots (manuscripts and original art) should be completed by September 1, 1996. There may be some flexibility with completion dates. To receive a detailed copy of a request for bid (including the conservation survey) for any of this material, please contact Karen Lightner (see below). A pre-bid examination may be arranged for any prospective bidder. Deadline for bids is March 1, 1996. The contracts will be awarded by March 15, 1996.
