Subject: Consolidating deteriorated leather
In response to Cor Knops about powdery leather (Conservation DistList Instance: 9:19), I have for the past 3 years successfully used klucel g as a consolidant for decayed or weak leather.I mix it with ethanol to the consistency of syrup (sorry I can't be more precise) and I apply it with a lint free rag. The treatment may require more than one coat ,and the entire cover is treated including the turn ins ,letting dry between coats. Although I have not encountered the problem Cor has with stickiness, a thin coat of Renaissance wax would seal and protect against moisture and adhesion to the skin when handled.
