In response to Ellen McCrady's mention of Japanese research into
particles released as concrete cures, I offer the following
citations:

Toishi, K. and Kenjo, T., "Alkaline Material Liberated into
Atmosphere from New Concrete." Journal of Paint Technology, Vol.
    39, No.506 (March 1967), pp. 152-155.

Toishi, K. and Kenjo, T., "A Simple Method of Measuring the
Alkalinity of Air in New Concrete Buildings." Studies in
    Conservation, Vol. 13 (1968), pp. 213-214.

These were both referenced in Kenzo Toishi's

"Tropical Climate and New Concrete Building for a Museum," in
Conservation in the Tropics: Proceedings of the Asia-Pacific
Seminar on Conservation of Cultural Property (Feb. 7-16, 1972),
    edited by O. P. Agrawal.
