Two workshops dealing with matting and hinging techniques are being
offered this spring by the Williamstown Art Conservation Center. The
instructors for both workshops are Leslie Paisley, Conservator of
Paper, Rebecca Johnston, Assistant Conservator of Paper,
Williamstown Art Conservation Center.

Basic Matting And Hinging Workshop

This one day workshop is a basic, introductory course, designed for
those with no prior experience in museum quality matting and
hinging.  The course will include lectures, demonstrations and hands
on training. Participants should bring three works of art on paper
*no larger than 16" x 20"* representing different matting problems
for discussion.

A.  Discussion and Demonstrations

    1.  Basic principles of archival matting and hinging for storage,
        exhibition and loans.

    2.  Selection of materials.  Testing for pH and groundwood.

    3.  Various matting structures, including standard 4 ply window,
        recessed window mats for pastels, chalk and charcoal, and
        double sided window mats.

    4.  Mat cutting demonstration.

    5.  Paste making, mixing, cooling, and straining.

    6.  Attachment of artwork to backboard and hinging options.

    7.  Working with mock ups, participants will practice various
        hinging techniques.

    8.  Acceptable alternatives to cooked starch paste.

Advanced Matting and Hinging Workshop
April 19 1996

Registration Deadline:  March 29, 1996

This intensive workshop is directed to experienced museum
preparators and exhibition technicians responsible for matting and
hinging artifacts. The workshop will include lecture and discussion
of techniques, materials, and case studies as well as hands-on
training.  Topics covered in the workshop will include:

    1.  Hinging techniques and modifications including consideration
        of difficult, nontraditional papers.

    2.  Rehinging a work with multiple old hinges which pucker, draw
        or show through the paper support.

    3.  Matting and framing for double sided drawings.

    4.  Edge repairs to strengthen torn or weakened paper prior to
        hinging.

    5.  Hinging techniques for works requiring nonaqueous adhesives.

    6.  Storage and housing considerations.

    7.  Preparation for travelling exhibitions.

Participants are encouraged to bring slides or documentation of
specific pieces for class discussion.
