Subject: Tree bark document
I recently received some questions about the care of an 1882 document printed on tree bark (suspected to be cherry wood). The item is described as "paper thin," tightly rolled, and brittle. Is humidification, as developed for paper documents, an appropriate treatment for relaxing and unrolling tree bark? In the matter of storage environment and housing, would this item be treated like paper or like a wood object? Does anyone out there have experience with this kind of document?
