Inflatable shipping bags

Bullock Alison has raised the question of inflatable shipping bags
for artifacts.  Although I cannot [comment on] the type inquired
about, I can offer a comment of caution.  I am a long-time member of
the National Ski Patrol. There was a time in the 1970s and 1987s
when Air splints were used with frequency.  They were made of
plastic and were supposed to withstand the cold, although we
generally carried them inside our parkas.  The problem was that we
always had to pad over the ski boot buckles to make sure that we
didn't puncture them as we were taking the person off the slope.  I
would, therefore, be worried that such a bag could be punctured
during transport thus providing no protection at all.

p.s.  These are not being used much on the slopes any more.
