Subject: Paraloid B72 as consolidant
Re: Dr. Koob's message on fossil consolidants: I agree with him on all the major points. I would like to point out, however, that there are a couple of peer-reviewed publications on the subject of adhesives and consolidants for use on fossils: one by Dan Chaney and me, in _Vertebrate Paleontological Techniques_ (Cambridge University Press) and one by Jessica Johnson and me (in _Conservation of Palaeontological Material_, Butterworths, just out). Fossil preservation comes in such a wide variety of forms and presents such a wide variety of problems that no one approach based on ceramics, bone, or ivory can cover all the situations a palaeontologist encounters.
