Subject: Dust jackets
At the last ALA meeting, Nancy Carlson Schrock gave a very interesting presentation on preserving modern books with their dust jackets as examples of publishing art/style in the 20th century. I brought the possibility to the attention of the Preservation Committee at Oberlin and the consensus was that it would entail too much work in the Preparations Department to cover the jackets, make holes for the call number to show through, etc. However, a suggestion was made to save the dust jackets in a special collection (noting the call number of the book from which each came). Has anyone else made a collection of dust jackets removed from books? If so, could we receive some pointers on how to proceed.
