Silk painting supports before 1700

For a really early source of silk used as a painting support try
this article:

Fong Chow, "Ma Wang Tui: A Treasure - Trove from the Western Han
    Dynasty," Artibus Asiae 35, (1973), 5-14.

It documents the silk paintings, along with a fascinating collection
of objects, recovered from an undisturbed tomb of a noble lady who
lived in the Han Dynasty, (B.C. 206-24 A.D.) They found a t-shaped
silk painting draped over the coffin, their may be conservation data
in the bibliography. ( got this from a reprint and so I cant see the
full bib.) Good luck,

Pat Strong
