Cultural Resource Management Program
Fall 1995 at the University of Victoria

Registration has now begun in "Museums in Historic Buildings", a
course we are offering at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, from
November 13-22.

The rich architectural and cultural resources of Colonial
Williamsburg in Virginia provide a unique setting for intensive
study of the inherent conflicts encountered when using historic
buildings for museum purposes. This course, for both museum and
heritage preservation professionals, looks at the difficulties in
balancing the needs of collections, staff, and visitors with the
need to maintain the historic and architectural integrity of the
structure.

The following topics are covered through workshops, site visits, and
case studies:

    *   philosophies of intervention
    *   preservation standards and guidelines
    * architectural impact of museum uses
    * establishing policy on degrees of intervention
    * environmental and physical concerns in storing and
        exhibiting collections
    *   architectural conservation
    *   preventive maintenance
    * issues of presentation and interpretation
    *   public access and safety
    *   visitor amenities
    * future approaches to the use of historic buildings as
        museums

Instructor: Dr. Thomas Taylor, Jr. is the Architectural Collections
Manager and Chief Architectural Conservator at The Colonial
Williamsburg Foundation. He is the Secretary Treasurer of the
