Conservation Assistant (Job #96S003) University of Delaware Library Duties and Responsibilities: Evaluates damaged and deteriorated library materials and devises appropriate treatment based on accepted conservation methods and procedures. Repairs materials, frequently performing complex and unique treatments to books, pamphlets, and serials. Designs and constructs protective enclosures, including encapsulation of brittle, fragile, and damaged materials. Monitors and records the transfer of materials between preservation unit and other library departments. Trains and supervises student assistants. Orders materials forconservation unit. Maintains and reports statistics. Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: High school diploma (or G.E.D.) required with two years of relevant college course work (art history, chemistry, book arts, studio arts, art conservation) preferred. Requires knowledge of proper treatment of works of art on paper or library materials and one year experience handling and repairing these materials. Requires ability to work independently and devise solutions to problems; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to work cooperatively with others; previous supervisory experience; strong organizational and time management skills. Good manual dexterity and attention to detail is essential. Specialized conservation skills developed asan apprentice through formal training in book repair techniques with a professional conservator preferred. Familiarity with microcomputers and the Technical Services Module of DELCAT preferred.
