PARS joint meeting on microfilming

From: Lee Dirks <lee_dirks>
Date: Thursday, June 15, 1995
The PARS (Preservation and Reformatting Section, ALA) Preservation
Microfilming Discussion Group and the Micropublishing and
Preservation Microfilming Task Force will hold a Joint Meeting at
ALA's Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois. It will be held on
Sunday, June 25th, 1995 from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM in the Hyatt Regency
(Field Room), and the topic will be "International Filming
Initiatives."

During the first hour, two approaches will be taken to discuss the
subject of international filming: international filming efforts
undertaken by foreign organizations, and institutions from the
United States and their various projects abroad. Speakers currently
include: Marlys Rudeen from the Center for Research Libraries (CRL),
the Coordinator of Area Microfilming Projects, and Sonja Jordan from
the University of Notre Dame Libraries to discuss her successful
applications to the Commission on Preservation and Access and a
private foundation to undertake preservation microfilming efforts in
Bulgaria. Both planning and administrative efforts will be
discussed. All interested parties are invited to attend and
participate.

Other specific issues to be raised include: (1) What preservation
microfilming standards and guidelines are used internationally? (2)
How is the bibliographic control of microforms addressed abroad?
(Discussion of the use of the NRMM and EROMM), (3) What are the
issues involved in creating preservation microfilm abroad?, and (4)
Is there a central clearinghouse for information on this subject?
And who can locate, collect, and share information on international
filming efforts? (A limited number of handouts for this session
will be available.)

In the last half hour following this forum, the PARS Micropublishing
and Preservation Microfilming Task Force will convene to consider
next steps in analyzing the differences between preservation
microfilming and micropublishing.

This Joint Meeting will be moderated by Lee Dirks (and Eileen
Usovicz); a new moderator of the PARS Preservation Microfilming
Discussion Group will be selected and approved during this meeting.
Please join us.
