Subject: AIC Archives Group meeting
As reported earlier, the AIC Archives Conservation Group will meet in St. Paul on Thursday, 8 June 1995 in Wabasha Rooms 3 and 4 of the Radisson Hotel from 7:30 - 9:30. (Please note that Book and Paper RATS business will take place from 6:30 - 7:30 the same evening so there should not be a conflict.) A discussion of the Code of Ethics (COE) and Guidelines for Practice (GFP) commentaries relating to Documentation will be the broad focus for this two hour meeting. During this meeting we hope to come to some understanding of the *level of documentation needed* in archives conservation when dealing with *mass treatments*, *batch treatments*, of *limited number item treatment*. (Because there seems to be greater clarity and agreement among archives conservators for documenting single item treatment, we do not plan place much emphasis on addressing this issue in St. Paul.) Areas to consider include (but are not limited) to documentation of: holdings maintenance projects micrographics and digitization prep pest management fumigation exhibition duration exposure light levels supports/minor stabilization housekeeping custom housing Along with considering the *level* of documentation needed, we also wish to address important related issues, such as *how to document* (which brings up such issues as how do you rationalize spending more time on the documentation than on the treatment?) and *how to access the documentation* (need for standards for retrieval). I hope that this outline will prompt you to engage in Thursday night's discussion. Please do not hesitate to contact me via telephone 404-656-2374 or email bm.gsk [at] rlg__stanford__edu until Tuesday afternoon and thereafter at the Radisson if you would like to offer additional ideas for discussion.
