Ellen Chin awarded Gaylord Collections Conservation Award

From: Nancy C. Schrock <nschrock>
Date: Saturday, May 6, 1995
Gaylord Bros. is pleased to announce the winner of its second
Collections Conservation Award. Ellen Chin, Conservator of the New
York City Municipal Archives, will receive a $1000 grant for
conservation training and an all expense paid trip to attend the
1995 conference of American Institute for Conservation in St. Paul,
Minnesota.

Ms. Chin will use her grant to attend the ICCROM International
Course on Paper Conservation. She was the only American selected to
participate in this two month program on the chemistry of paper and
techniques for its conservation. Her training will allow the New
York Municipal Archives to expand treatment options for its records,
which range from colonial documents to nineteenth century
photographs and the original drawings for Central Park and the
Brooklyn Bridge.

The award was established by Gaylord Bros., one of the leading
sources of archival storage materials and conservation supplies. Its
goal is to support the professional development of individuals
involved in the conservation of archives and library collections
(book, paper, or photographic materials). Applications are judged
by Gaylord's Preservation Advisory Committee, an independent group
of conservators, preservation administrators, and preservation
educators. Criteria include the quality of the proposal, the
qualifications of the applicant, and the potential impact of the
proposal on the collections in the applicant's care.

The Gaylord Collections Conservation Award is given annually, and
applications are currently being accepted for 1996. Next year's
award will include a $1000 grant and an all expense paid trip to the
annual conference of the American Institute for Conservation in
Norfolk, Virginia. For more information and an application form,
call Gaylord Customer Service at 800-448-6160 or the Gaylord
Preservation Help Line at 800-428-3631. The deadline for submission
is December 1, 1995.
