Foxed paper needed for research

From: Jim Druzik <jdruzik>
Date: Monday, April 10, 1995
A previous request for paper samples exhibiting foxing (and mold
deterioration), posted for Mary-Lou Florian by Barb Dexter, should be
elaborated.

Mary-Lou Florian is currently conducting research on the removal of
discoloration products from paper caused by mold and fungi. As
deterioration progresses, the prognosis for an aesthetically acceptable
treatment which does not damage the paper becomes distinctly more
pessimistic.

As a result, Mary-Lou is investigating an enzymatic approach which will
free melanine compounds from their chitin framework within the fungal
hyphae. This will assist in solubilizing and removing these
discolorations. Therefore, this is not another foxing characterization
study in itself, but rather one which promises a fundamentally different
approach to the practical treatment of mold stains.
