Book measuring devices

Several years ago I designed a book measurer that is pretty mistake
proof. It is simply a rectangular platform with vertical surface at one
end. Another parallel, but mobile, vertical surface faces it and slides
the length of the platform on two runners that fit into two grooves. In
reminds you of a foot measurer... A ruler along the long side of the
platform corresponds to protruding point attached to the mobile vertical
surface. This style guarantees that you will always be measuring your
three dimensions at their greatest point.

Someone handy in a wood shop should be able to put one together in an
afternoon.
