New Information Technologies: The 10 Toughest Decisions Facing Library
    Managers

Full-day Workshop. The ten most difficult decisions faced by library
    administrators in the areas of planning, budgeting, and staffing;
the role of the library within the parent organization; and
technology leadership will be systematically explored during this
workshop. For each of these decision areas, the group will learn
about the forces working against decisive action by library
managers, the consequences of inaction, factors to consider in
making decisions, and options available. These concepts will be
illustrated and reinforced using group exercises dealing with
specific new technologies such as imaging, Internet navigation
tools, and electronic document delivery. Led by Tom Kinney, Library
Liaison Officer, AMIGOS. Member: $160/$135 early, non-member:
    $225/$200 early.

Linking Strategic Objectives to Your Library Budget

Full-day Workshop. Learn how to recast your library's line-item
budget into a program budget and gain better control of your
resources. This workshop will give you tools to link the strategic
objectives of your institution or organization to the services
provided by your library. Barbara Robinson, Library Management
Consultant with Robinson & Associates, will discuss methods to
quantify costs for operating specific library services; focus on
ways to make the best use of resources; and differentiate between
capital and operating expenditures, direct and indirect costs,
average and marginal costs, and fixed versus variable costs.
Cosponsored by Special Libraries Association. Member: $160/$135
    early, non-member: $185/160 early.

Covering Your Assets: Insurance for Cultural Institutions

Full-day Workshop. Differentiating the types of insurance and
working with risk managers and insurance agents is a skill that
administrators of libraries, museums, and archives need to acquire.
Jeanne Drewes, Preservation Consultant and educator, will illustrate
the benefits of having insurance and the impact that working under
an inadequate policy could have on your institution. Member:
    $100/$75 early, non-member: $125/110 early.
