PVA health hazards

Does anyone have any information about the health hazards of using
polyvinyl acetate to repair books? An employee in my library claims to
lose hair and acquire Renaud's Syndrome symptoms from breathing the
fumes.

I am in need of:

    1.  Any studies regarding health hazards caused by PVA

    2.  Information about the merits or drawbacks of alternative
        adhesives

    3.  Suggestions for designing a mobile book repair workstation  (I
        have to take my show on the road.)
