From: Piero Tiano <tiano>
Date: Friday, March 10, 1995
With reference to the query on the conservation of the archeological
finding of a turtle shell in Greece (from Jerry Podany), our laboratory
have studied a Whale (Balenoptera physalus) skeleton placed inside the
Accademia dei Fisiocritici Museum in Siena, Italy. The whale was found
on sandy beach 20 years ago. The bones porous structure were filled with
calcite and clay minerals. The skeleton did not was cleaned but only
treated with a fluoroelastomer polymer which possess protective and
consolidating characteristics. The results of the study were published
(in Italian with English abstract) in Museol. Sci. VII (3-4), 1990:
175-185.
