Workshop on research techniques in photographic conservation

From: Jesper S. Johnsen <bev-jsj>
Date: Wednesday, February 22, 1995
Research Techniques in Photographic Conservation
An International Workshop,
14-19. May 1995, Copenhagen, Denmark

The Workshop will gather speakers from laboratories which do research in
the preservation of photographs together with representatives for users
of the research results; curators, librarians, conservators etc. Apart
from the speakers, we expect 30 people to attend the workshop. We will
prioritise participants who are responsible for the preservation of
photographic collections in the broadest sense and who will participate
in the debate. We hope that all will prepare themselves for an active
role in the workshop. To help with the preparation, all will receive a
copy of the preprints before they begin their journey to the workshop.

The intent of the workshop is to go behind the research results and
discuss methods used for research, why they are used and how results
change thinking about preservation: how research projects are planned,
how to choose the methods and how to interpret and publish the results.
Discussions on new directions and needs in research are included.

We hope that the participants will leave the workshop with a renewed
respect for the possibilities and limitations of a variety of
investigation techniques and how they can be implemented in practical
preservation initiatives. This should also be reflected in the
preprints, which will present a survey of research methods used in 1995
and the directions for further research in preservation of photographs.

In addition to the deep scientific program, we will arrange an amusing
excursion to Scandinavian photo museums and the stimulating hospitality
of the city of Copenhagen.

The workshop and papers will be in English. The registration fee for the
workshop will be 3000 DKK including an excursion to Norway and Sweden.
The registration closes April 3, 1995.
