IFLA meeting on library preservation

From: Manning Ralph <rwm>
Date: Monday, February 20, 1995
A Satellite meeting on "Library Preservation and Conservation in the
90s" will be held in Budapest, Hungary on August 15-17, 1995 at the
National Szechenyi Library. This meeting is being organized by the IFLA
(International Federation of Library Associations) Section on
Conservation in cooperation with the IFLA Preservation and Conservation
Core Program. The meeting will take place immediately before the 61st
IFLA Council and General Conference which will take place in Istanbul
from August 20 to 26.

There will be papers and discussions in plenary sessions as well as in
smaller sections. Visits to book and paper conservation workshops will
also be included in the programme. An opening reception, a concert and
a closing party will provide some relaxation and there will be an
opportunity to enjoy some of the sights of Budapest and the countryside
through tours being organized before and after the meeting.

Some of the subjects planned for the professional programme:

    * national libraries as museums of books and as living libraries
        at the same time--resolving contradictions (surrogate copies,
        new technologies, use of permanent paper);

    *   preventive conservation and disaster recovery;

    * new concepts such as collection conservation and
        microenvironments;

    * mass conservation: methods and dilemmas (disinfection,
        deacidification, strengthening of paper and books);

    * international and regional efforts in preservation and access
        (the American and European Commissions on Preservation and
        Access; regional PAC centres; IFLA Section on Conservation;
        UNESCO Memory of the World programme);

    * regional problems and practices in preservation, conservation
        and training of conservators and librarians for preservation.

The meeting will be conducted in English.

Registration is $180 US before April 30 and $220 after April 30. The
