Fire response

From: Bullock Alison <asb>

I have been asked to post this query by Jan Michaels, Preservation
Policy and Planning Officer at the National Library of Canada, who is
not a member of this list. Please respond to her directly.

The National Library of Canada has recently installed a new fire
detection and suppression system. We are interested in hearing from
any libraries who have had experience in negotiating response from
their local fire departments, in order to minimize damage to
collections. As well, we would like to know whether people have had
experience in dealing with regulatory agencies (and/or the fire
department) regarding appropriate staff response to mitigate
collection damage by fire. That is, we would like to ensure that
staff have the approved responsibility as well as appropriate
training so that in the event of a *minor* fire, they have
sufficient confidence, knowledge and training to be able to douse
the fire without waiting for the fire department to arrive. Please
e-mail Jan.Michaels [at] nlc-bnc__ca or (if it's too complicated to put in
writing) call 613-996-3945. If you prefer, she will call you. Thank
    you,

Alison Bullock
