Spring-back binding

I am presently working on a 1886 hotel register that I need assistance
with. The volume is 15 x 10 X 2" and I believe is was originally
constructed as a spring back. Other Volumes of the same hotel register
seem to be spring backs although I aim not that familiar with that
particular binding structure.

The volume is 1/4 leather and the spine is totally detached from the
covers. It is very thick cardboard, at least 1/8" thick. The textblock
is sewn on what I think is vellum straps. Some of the straps are
broken.

I have some concerns about trying to reattach the spine to the boards
since I know very little about the spring back structure. I have
considered reinforcing the straps with tyvek straps, consolidating the
textblock and reinforcing it with Japanese tissue and leaving the spine
off entirely. That would keep it all together and support the original
sewing.

I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. If you're rather talk than
type, just send me a phone number and I will call. thanks, artemis
