Heat pipes

At the Amsterdam Municipal Archive we are curious what a heat pipe (as
mentioned in the reply of Ellen McCrady to the pest control problem
[DistList Instance: 8:34]) could be? How does it remove moisture from
the air and is it therefore only usable in warmer climates? or can we
use it, as the name suggests, also as a heating device? Thank you for
