Database software for archives

I would like to post an inquiry for a friend who maintains an archive
consisting of approximately 100,000 documents and is searching for an
off the shelf database software package or composite of packages that is
capable of storing one or more scanned images and a custom designed
worksheet for each document in the archive. Once the software is found,
then hardware to accommodate it will be purchased, so recommendations
for accompanying hardware equipment would be appreciated, too. I do not
anticipate a need to accommodate more than one user at a time. CD-ROM
may be considered as well. If anyone belongs to an institution which
utilizes such a system, could you please state what you use, what
hardware it is run upon, and then comment on whether the package meets
your needs. Please respond to me at libem051 [at] sivm__si__edu and I will
summarize the responses and post them on the DistList.
