We are offering a three-day immersion course on the care of textile
collections in museum settings. It runs from November 7 - 9 here at
the University of Victoria, and will be taught by Jane Hutchins who
has worked as a textile conservator= and consultant with many North
    American collections.

The course has the following description:

    CARING FOR TEXTILE COLLECTIONS

The costumes, household linens, soft furnishings and other textiles
which make up significant parts of many museum collections require
very specialized care and handling to ensure their safety. This
three-day workshop for staff responsible for collections of costume
and flat textiles will emphasize the principles of preventive
conservation and the implementation of effective in-house
    preservation practices. Topic include:

      - the characteristics of textiles and textile collections and how
        these influence care
      - the influence of environment on deterioration
      - protecting textile collections against pests
      - appropriate handling
      - techniques for storage and display
      - working with a conservator

Lectures will be augmented with demonstrations and practical
    exercises.
