Marking books

The Cataloging Dept. at Brown University marks call numbers on items
cataloged for the collection and occasionally encounters dark paper,
particularly on items with extra parts such as maps or music scores.
Since pencil is generally used to mark the items in a specific location,
the concern is that the markings will not be seen when used on dark or
colored paper. What are other institutions doing about this? The
Cataloging Dept. wants to use a white ink to mark these items. Is
anyone familiar with white ink pens and potential concerns for using
them? Are there other suggestions?
