The following appeared in ALCTS Network News Volume 8, Number 5,
September 9, 1994:

Nancy E. Elkington has edited the _RLG Archives Microfilming
Manual_, the first publication of its kind to address
comprehensively the many issues involved in preserving manuscripts
and other archival materials on microfilm. Based on RLG's earlier
manual, the _RLG Preservation Microfilming Handbook_ (1992), which
provides guidelines for filming monographs and serials, the new
manual applies and adapts principles from the 1992 manual to
archival preservation and examines in depth the special problems
involved in selecting, preparing, filming, and providing access to
archival materials being preserved on microfilm. It is available for
$45.00 plus shipping and handling from Distribution Services Center,
The Research Libraries Group, 1200 Villa Street, Mountain View, CA
94041-1100 or by e-mail to BL.DSC [at] RLG__STANFORD__EDU. The fax number
    is 415-964-0943.

The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress has
contracted with Picture Elements Incorporated for consulting
services to work toward resolving preservation issues related to the
use of digital imaging technology in libraries and archives. The
project will develop a database for captured images for purposes of
comparison and evaluation; develop various approaches to image
capture and compression for representative materials from LC's print
and pictorial collections; develop a methodology for evaluating
image quality based on compression; provide programming to support
interchange and interface needs; and develop standards-based
approaches to the development of a proposed preservation file
format. A report summarizing findings and recommendations is being
prepared. Contact Basil Manns at 202-707-5213.
