This particular odor is a new one on me, however what you MAY be
smelling is the remnants of a solvent that is used in tape
manufacturing.  That odor should have been long gone, and may indicate
that the tape has not properly "cured".  Although this is not a short
term problem, it is probably a good idea to copy this material.
