Flattening lined maps

Has anyone flattened paper maps with cloth backings using a
humidification chamber? How successful was it?

My training discouraged this type of treatment and all cloth backings
need to be removed  prior to humidification to prevent warping. Times
have changed and perhaps treatments approaches have too. Thanks,
