Curators-Conservators Discussion Group

From: Charlotte Brown <ecz5cbb>
Date: Monday, June 13, 1994
The Curators-Conservators Discussion Group of the ALA Rare Books and
Manuscripts Section will meet at ALA in Miami.

    Date: Jun 26th
Time: 8:30 am to 11 am
    Location: Doral Medit Center

The scheduled program will have Randy Silverman, Preservation Librarian/
University of Utah, continue the Midwinter discussion on determining
appropriate repair and/or conservation treatment for notable original
bindings located in general library stacks. Attendees of the Midwinter
session will recall that one binding type of particular concern for
Silverman and others was the Victorian-era binding. Much of the meeting
was spent identifying the issues and discussing possible solutions.
Afterwards, the consensus was to continue the discussion and consider
compiling decision-making guidelines specifically for Victorian
bindings. Once drafted, the guidelines would be presented to
conservators who are members of AIC (American Institute for Conservation
of Historic and Artistic Works) for their comments.

It is anticipated that a portion of the upcoming Miami meeting will be
spent in reviewing examples of Victorian bindings and the overall
contexts of the decision-making process, namely, the library
preservation program and guidelines for the identification and
transfer of materials to special collections. If time permits, recent
comments email-posted by Robert Milevski, Preservation Officer/Princeton
Univ., on the ethics of conservation treatments in general will also be
opened for discussion (copies of Milevski's posting will be distributed
at the meeting.)

Attendees are encouraged to bring samples of transfer guidelines,
treatment decision forms, etc. as they might apply to this study.
Attendees are also asked to refer to:
