Consolidation of gouache

Bob Futernick's reply explains the problems elegantly, as usual; an
additional application technique which might be helpful is the ultrasonic
mister invented by Stefan Michalski for application of consolidant
(especially gelatine) to porous matte paints. This was remarkably effective in
the demonstration I saw, although gelatine's potential for darkening was not
