Consolidation of gouache

I am working on a collection of botanical illustrations from the 1880s
done in watercolours, gouache and some areas of glaze, some of which
(especially the glaze areas) are suffering cracking and paint loss.  I
have been using a methylcellulose solution (approx. 2%) in water to
consolidate the damaged areas.  This has been fine on the glaze, but now
I have to stabilize an area of gouache and the methyl cellulose leaves
an undesired glossy appearance, even when further diluted it is not
quite as glossy but still obvious.  Does anyone have any other
suggestions?
