Presentation on 19th Century Bookbindings

From: Randy Silverman <rsilverm>
Date: Monday, April 4, 1994
Sue Allen will conduct "Connoisseurship of 19th-Century Bookbindings," a
day-long presentation Sunday, June 12th at the Annual Meeting of the
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC)
in Nashville.

Ms. Allen is widely recognized as the foremost American authority on
publishers' cloth bookbindings. Her contributions to this area of book
history have helped define the field and resulted in a number of
significant publications, including: Victorian Bookbindings: A Survey
(1972), "Floral-patterned Endpapers in Nineteenth-century American
Books," (Winterthur Portfolio, 1977), and "Machine-stamped Bookbindings,
1834-1860," (Antiques, 1979). Her latest work, co-authored with
recently deceased Charles Gullans, Decorated Cloth in America:
Publishers' Bindings, 1840-1910, is currently in press.

Ms. Allen's commitment to teaching this aspect of the history of the
book is demonstrated by her years of lectures at Columbia's School of
Library Service, and her week-long classes held annually at Books at
Virginia: Rare Book School. Her lecture will provide a condensation of
the historical background needed to gain an increased sensitivity and
appreciation of publisher's bindings. If you are interested in learning
about 19th century publishers' bookbindings or would simply welcome the
opportunity to hear Ms. Allen speak, this session is certain to be
informative, refreshing, and fun!

Ms. Allen's lecture is sponsored by the Library Collections Conservation
Discussion Group of the AIC. For more information about fees and
accommodations, please contact the AIC national office at 1717 K Street,
N.W., #301, Washington, DC 20006; (202) 452-9545.
