Conference on magnetic media

This is a reminder that the deadline is approaching to register for the
ALA/ALCTS/PLMS institute, "The Magnetic Media Challenge: Preservation of
Audio Tape & Videotape in Libraries and Archives," to be held April
29-30 aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Cal.  There are still some
spaces available, so it may be possible for ALCTS to accept
registrations even after the announced deadline of April 15.

This institute is based on the one offered in Atlanta in May 1993, but
the planning committee has revised the schedule, speakers, and format in
response to feedback after that first institute.  It will include solid
presentations on the physical/chemical nature of magnetic media and
their life expectancy, plus theoretical and practical guidelines
management issues associated with storage, handling, and use.  This
time, there will also be breakout sessions allowing for in-depth
discussion of issues such as: reformatting/re-recording, copyright,
product sources and vendors, and practical collection maintenance
routines.
